This blog will serve as a way of communication between myself and the parents. It will be a way for you to stay connected and informed as to what goes on in the classroom. Please fill out the attached permission slip and return to school or I will have some available at supply-drop off. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Blog Permission Slip
I would like to welcome you to the new 2017-2018 year at Kreft Primary. I look forward to meeting all of you and working with you. This is sure to be a great year!
On the blog and within the snack calendars, I will include a schedule for the various specials such as PE, Library, Art, and Music. Please be sure that your child has proper shoes for PE (tennis shoes, no sandals or flip flops) and remember to return library books on assigned library days (these will be posted on the snack/special calendars each month).
Our Specials Schedule is as follows: Day 1- Music Day 2- Library Day 3- P.E. Day 4- Music/Art Day 5- Library Day 6- P.E. Please be sure that your child has tennis shoes and proper clothing for PE days so that he/she can participate in all activities. Please help your child to find a safe place at home for library books so they come back on time. This year our specials start at 1:00. (I will also include a schedule with our snack calendar.)
Breakfast: Our school serves breakfast from 8:10-8:35 in the cafeteria. Your student is more than welcome to eat breakfast. If you would not like them to eat breakfast, tell the food service staff and they can mark this on your student’s account so that they do not eat breakfast at school.
Lunch Procedures: Students will eat lunch from 11:00-11:40. You are more than welcome to join us for lunch. If you plan on joining your child, please plan to arrive by 11:00, so that your child will not be waiting for you. Please check in at the office and wait in the front entryway. Students will pass by there on their way to the cafeteria. Teachers do not take students to lunch, there will be another adult from our building supervising them during this time.
School Birthday Celebrations
We celebrate birthdays at school in our classroom. Your child will be asked to supply snack that day, please feel free to send a special birthday treat. If your child has a summer birthday, we will plan to celebrate it in May. That way every child will have the opportunity to share his/her birthday with the class. The school handbook states that birthday party invitations may not be handed out at school unless the whole class is invited or at least all the girls or all the boys. Please stick to these rules to eliminate hurt feelings.
Sending Money/Notes to School
Remember that all money needs to be put into an envelope with your child’s name, the purpose of the money, and the teacher’s name on it. This can be placed in the take home folder’s “return to school” pocket. Any other notes or forms you wish to return to me can also be placed in the “return to school” pocket in the blue folder.
Take Home Folders/Planners
Please help your child learn the life skills of organization and responsibility. Your child will receive a blue take home folder. This folder will be sent home every afternoon with important notes and your child’s work from the day. The work and notes need to be cleaned out each evening and reviewed with your child. The folder needs to be returned to school every day! This will help ensure that all communication from school arrives home in a timely and safe manner. Please send any notes from home or money in this folder. Remember all money needs to be in an envelope with your child’s name, purpose for the money, and the teacher’s name on it. When sending notes or money to school please put the items in the “return to school” pocket in the blue take home folder and students will need to be responsible for giving these items to me when they arrive. Folders will go between home and school every day even if there is nothing in it. Thanks you!
We will also be using the Daily Planners. Students will be writing you a short message every day and I will be leaving feedback about their day (ie, sticker, smiley face, note). Please make sure to check your child’s planner each night and initial, so that I know you have seen it as I will initial it each day.
In the take-home folder are a few Scholastic book orders. If you would like to order books please fill out the form and send cash or checks with the filled out form in an envelope. Please make checks payable to Scholastic. You are also welcome to order books on-line by using the code listed on the order. Our class code is P84W4. Through ordering books, we are able to use bonus points to gain free books for our classroom! Happy shopping!
We will be having a group snack time with food and water on a daily basis. Please read the newsletter carefully to see when your child has snack. On that particular day please send 24 healthy snacks for your child to share with the class. It is district policy that all snacks are store bought and not homemade.
If the snack you choose is individually packaged your child will be able to pass out their own snack. If you choose to send bulk snack such as boxes of crackers or bags of pretzels I will need to pass out snack. I am fine with either choice. When buying bulk check the number of servings on each package to make sure we have enough for 24 students.
PLEASE make healthy choices when choosing a snack to send. We will only be serving sugary snacks such as cookies or ice cream on birthdays and special occasions. We have access to a refrigerator so cold choices such as yogurt, fruit or cheese are fine. Just remind your child to tell me in the morning that snack should go in the refrigerator.
Suggestions for healthy snacks: granola bars, string cheese, crackers, small muffins, vegetables in a baggie, fresh fruit in a baggie, applesauce, raisins, popcorn, pretzels, cereal.
Testing 1st Few Weeks
As we are going to be testing your child in various skill areas over the first few weeks, we ask that the first few weeks of school your child gets plenty of sleep. We would like each student to be well-rested for the best possible results. The testing will focus on literacy skills (such as reading sight words and blending sounds together), science, and math skills. This testing is nothing to be concerned about as it is something that is done every year to help us depict areas of strength and weakness.
Classroom Wish List
In years past, parents have asked if there are things needed for our classroom that they could donate. If you are interested in purchasing something for our room, the wish list is written below:
- Extra snacks
- Clorox wipes (for the desks)
- Small prizes for the prize box
- Any art supplies (paper, scissors, glue)
- Glue Sticks
- Dry-erase markers
- Eraser Tops
The school nurse will administer all medications. Please contact the nurse if your child is to be given any medicine during school hours. If your child has asthma, you may want to consider leaving a spare inhaler with the nurse. If your child has a food allergy please let me know, so I can check all labels during snack.
Rules and Routines
In our classroom we have three very simple rules:
1. Be Responsible
2. Be Respectful
3. Be Safe
I encourage you to talk with your child about our rules and possibly even enforce them at home. They are short and simple, yet they cover everything from teasing, put-downs, whining, etc. The more consistency from school to home the better!
We will also use a token economy in our classroom, inspired by Positive Behavior Supports (PBIS). Students will earn tickets throughout the day for doing the right thing and treating people right. They will write their name on the back and place them in a large bowl we have in our classroom. Randomly, I will choose tickets for students to get to be the line leader, pass out papers, and other fun incentives. The more tickets they earn the better chance they have at getting their name called. We will start our "tickets" the second week of school. At the end of each week I will also pick two winners from the bowl of tickets who will get to choose a prize for the following week. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Your child may bring in a water bottle with them during the day. Water bottles need to be labeled with your child’s name. They will come home daily to be washed and refilled. Please do not send juices or other beverages.
Drop-Off and Pick-Up
You are more than welcome to walk your child to the classroom each morning for the first few days of school. After that, we ask that you drop your child off at the front entrance and allow them to walk to our room independently.
Student arrival time is from 8:10-8:30 am. Students are not permitted in the building before 8:10 as teachers are preparing for the day and there is no supervision for children. All students must be in the classroom by 8:35 am. Children who arrive after 8:35 will be marked tardy.
Children will be dismissed starting at 3:35 pm. Your child will only be released to the people you designate on the dismissal sheet or emergency card. If you need to pick up your child early, you must stop in the office. They will call your child from our room and I will dismiss them as soon as he/she is ready to go. (Cleaned up and packed up!)
Any time your child’s dismissal plan changes from his/her daily plan a written note or phone call to the office is necessary. Please include your child’s first AND last name, date and important details such as bus number or address to be dropped off. I forward all notes to the office and transportation is notified as to the changes if necessary. It is fine to email the information to me and Mrs. Teri Black in the office. I will always try to respond to emails to verify that I have received them. If you do not receive a response prior to dismissal it is wise to phone the office.
If anyone is interested in helping our class out during the year, please let me know. If you have even one afternoon a week free, we would love for you to come into our classroom to work with the students on literacy skills or help with cutting or organizing. Please send me a note or quick email letting me know what day of the week would work for you!
We are collecting Box Tops and Hy-Vee receipts at school. Box tops are found on many products: cereal boxes, kleenex boxes, muffin mixes, etc. Depending on the brand, box tops are found on many items. Each box top is worth 10 cents which goes directly to our school. Last year, alone, our PTA earned thousands of dollars for our district just by collecting Box Tops. To make things a little more motivating for students to bring Box Tops in, the PTA offers prizes to classrooms for bringing in so many Box Tops. Our class goal for the year is to earn 3,000 box tops. If we all work together, I know we can accomplish this goal. Also, any Hy-Vee receipts you get, please turn those in, as they, too, earn money for our school. We are also collecting Campbell's Soup Labels. Send any of those labels as well.
This year I have decided to have NO HOMEWORK. I truly believe the best thing you can do for your student at home is read to them, eat dinner with them, talk about their day, and play outside with them. The less technology time (Ipad, Iphone, computer, television, etc.) the better! If you feel as though your student needs practice activities for at home, I would gladly send items home, but their will be no formal homework this year.
We will have a Fall Party (October) and Spring Party (February). If you are interested in helping plan either of these parties please let me know. We will also need volunteers to help with different stations during the party, as well as, parents to just donate items such as snacks, juices, or prizes. Once again, if you are willing to help, let me know and I will mark your name down. Thanks!
P.E. Shoes/Library Books
Please be sure that your child has proper shoes for PE (tennis shoes, no sandals or flip flops) and that your child returns library books on the designated days. On the snack calendar, I have included the days we have P.E. and the days that library books are due. Thanks for your support!
Early Out Wednesdays
This year every Wednesday will be an early out, unless otherwise noted. The first early out will begin on August 30th. Please make sure you have arrangements for your student on these days and let me know if pick up procedures are different on these days for your student.
