Don't forget our class/year-end celebration is on Friday at 2 p.m. We will start with persuasive letter videos, I will give awards, and then your first grader will share their writing from the whole year with you. We will also have snacks and juice. After they are finished sharing you are free to take your student home with you that day! If you have any questions please let me know.
In large group reading we are finishing our last story of the year it is written by the soccer player Mia Hamm. It is a personal narrative and is a true story that happened in her life about her childhood. We will focus on different aspects of genre and compare and contrasting different writing styles.
In small group reading I am reading with students individually and finding their reading level for the end of the year.
In writing we are using editing checklists to make sure our informational books have all of the necessary elements and a lot of students are getting to type their work. They all choose something they are an expert in and wrote a true, informational book teaching all about that. We will finish these books this week, and then we will have our writing assessment over this unit on Tuesday, and our writing celebration next Wednesday. Next Thursday, I will have the students write and record videos for the kindergartners on what to expect in first grade.
In math we are still working on place value with tens and ones up to 120. We have started working with groups of tens and how adding the tens 3 tens + 4 tens = 7 tens is the sames as 30 + 40 = 70. We have been discussing place value and how adding the zero changes the quantity. I also sent home a math practice booklet your first grader could work on and do over the summer to keep their skills up over the summer.
In science we are focusing on living/non-living things and their characteristics.
In social studies we are focusing on money and the economy. The last week of school we will each make a project, create an advertisement for this project, record an advertisement, and then each student will try to buy an item with their pretend money.
