Looking ahead for our science unit, I could use some empty toilet paper tubes and empty shoe boxes. If you have ANY please send them and we will use them for science next month when we come back in January! Thank you!
We will also be having a few fun themed days before Winter Break, wear we will do some fun crafts associated with some fun children's books.
In reading, we are now doing a read aloud unit on kindness. We have discussed how all have a common theme of treat each other how you would like to be treated. It's amazing to see the students infer the theme and decipher how this theme is connected throughout all these stories. This week we are also focusing on problem and solution. We have discussed how all fiction stories have a problem and most of the time this problem is solved at the end of the story.
In small group, we are really focusing on summarizing and retelling the important parts in the beginning, middle and end. Not the small details but the big important parts.
In phonics, we are now focusing on looking at parts of words and sorting them by similarities. Today we sorted words based on their ending, -at or -an. This week we will be focusing a lot on spelling patterns found within words.
In writing, we have now started writing an entire book supporting our opinion on one topic. Students finished writing about their collections last week and are now writing about a topic they like or dislike and trying to fill 3- 5 pages supporting that opinion. This week we will learn and discuss how to add an introduction, conclusion and tips to that writing to support our opinion.
In math, we are working on subtraction problems with a missing addend. For example I have I have 13 presents and open some and now have 8. How many did I open. Some students have a hard time listening to the problem and automatically want to add these numbers together, so we have focused on stopping and just listening to the information and then deciding what action to take with the problem.
Science: In science, we will be focusing on lights and sounds this trimester. We will learn more about instruments and how to make sounds. We will even make our own instruments and fill them with different materials and see how the sounds differ.
Social Studies: We will be focusing on goods and services this trimester.
Other Important Information:
We have early outs every Wednesday at 2:30. The first one will begin on August 29th.

I will go over these assessments at February conferences the first week in February. A sign up with be emailed out in January. If you have any questions before then please let me know!
Every month I will send home a reading calendar log. If you and your student are already reading at home you can color in the shape for every book you read. Once complete you can sign it and return it for a FREE pizza hut pizza!! Feel free to send back November's back whenever you have it finished.
Mobile Food Pantry:

Scholastic Book Orders:
I am sending home December's book order today, and they will be due back Friday, December 14th. We also had a parent donate a book to every student in our class from their gym, CrossFit Vise. Thank you for the book donation! You can go online at scholastic.com and order our class code is P84W4. If you order some books and need them back sooner than December 14th, let me know, and I can rush your order.
This year Kreft has partnered with Dairy Queen to help target our attendance, so don't be surprised if your first grader comes home with a free Dairy Queen treat at some point this year!
We still also use iRead at school. Your student can log in from home using this log in:
Their log in is firstname.lastname and password is lctitans
I also have an epic! book account. Students can log in and look at, read, and have books read to them on a computer or smart device. Great for long trips in the car, etc. If you are logging in from the app go to Sign in with an already existing account, and down at the bottom it should say, student sign in. This is where you would type in our class code.
Our Class Code is: wzj2822
