In reading, we have now added 4 / 5 of our Daily 5 stations. We added Listen to Reading on Thursday, where students are able to listen to the shared reading stories we have read in class together. They are loving doing this station!
During our read aloud stories, we have just started a new text set that is all about friendship. We will read 5 stories that focus on the essential question "What does it mean to be a good friend?" With all 5 of these stories, we are really working on making predictions. During the read aloud, I stop and will ask students to make a prediction about what might happen next. This is a perfect thing to do at home with your first grader when you are reading! We have also been reading different shared reading books, and focusing on the different text features.
In phonics, we have been reading some poetry to add to our poetry binders and looking for sight word in these poems. We have also been looking at the beginning sounds of words.
In writing, we are still working on our small moment stories. We have discussed adding special words (first, next, then, after, etc.), writing in itsy, bitsy steps, and using twin sentences- so more than one sentence per page. Our main focus is having a beginning, middle and end, and having words before they do the pictures. We will continue to do small moments stories until after conferences.
In math we are still working on fact fluency to 10, and using number bonds. We just started making two number sentences the same so 4 + 1 = 3 + 2 and talking about why this is true. We have also been using the counting on strategy where one number is not drawn or used on their fingers, and the other is. For example 5 + 3 , the student would say 5 and count on , 6, 7, 8 with their fingers. I am going to be sending home 4-5 math games this week in a packet with the directions that you can play at home if you would like!
We will begin social studies and science in a couple of weeks.
Other Important Information:
We have early outs every Wednesday at 2:30. The first one will begin on August 29th.
Please make sure you are signed up for a conference, they are Monday, October 8th from 4- 8 p.m. and Thursday, October 11th from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Here is the link to sign up. If you haven't signed up I will email or text you in the next week! http://bit.ly/krfall18
During the month of September we will be doing a handful of reading and math assessments to see where the students are currently working. Some of these are one on one assessments with me, while others will be on the computer. This means I will not be starting small group work right away but am hopeful to begin the last week in September.
Your first grader has a planner that they write in everyday, normally a message from the board, and then I sign at the end of the day. This is a great place to write a note if you need to tell me note or I may write how your student's day is in their planner. It is their responsibility to get it out and write in it everyday.
September Snack Calendar. Here is October's Snack Calendar. We have 22 students in our class, and we have a student with a "Tree Nut" allergy. Please be considerate of this allergy when choosing snacks.
Mobile Food Pantry:
Kreft hosts a mobile food pantry the last Tuesday of the month every month. This is available for ANY families in need. September's food pantry is Tuesday, September 25th.
On Friday, September 21st there will be a first grade parent breakfast for parents to learn more about our first grade reading curriculum. If you are interested in coming a form went home on Friday. It is from 8:30 -10 a.m.
