In reading, we have just started to launch and learn about Daily 5. Daily 5 is a reading management piece that allows me to work with small groups of students and do guided reading. During Daily 5 students choose either Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Listening or Word Work. We are currently learning Read to Self. We have been discussing what their jobs are and what my job is during this time. We have also been practicing and building our stamina. Today we went book shopping so they had new books to look at and read during read to self.
We have also been reading new read aloud books and focusing on how character's feelings can change throughout a story and comparing texts to our self. We have read several beginning of school stories and have been comparing them. In phonics we have been just starting to look at beginning sounds and sorting words based on the beginning letter and sound that we hear. We are also beginning to do some shared reading tomorrow with a story called Monster ABC's. Next week I will begin assessing the students to find their instructional reading level so I begin small groups near the end of September.
In writing we are also just beginning to learn the procedures and routines during writing time. We are starting to discuss our jobs during writing time and the teacher's job as well. This week we will be working on some All About Me Books while we learn about our writing time, where the supplies are, and the structure of this time. Then we will begin writing Small Moments Stories.
In math we are just beginning to learn about number bonds and addition sentences. We are focusing on story problems and learning our math routines and stations. We are also learning some math games. I teach math in a 3 station set up. Every day students will have math with the teacher, math by themselves, and math with a partner. This means that the concept we are working on will be differentiated to their level. We will be taking our math assessments in the next couple of weeks so until then I will be teaching math as a whole group. Our first unit really focuses on the combinations to make 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 when adding.
We will begin social studies and science in a couple of weeks.
Other Important Information:
We have early outs every Wednesday at 2:30. The first one will begin on August 29th.
During the month of September we will be doing a handful of reading and math assessments to see where the students are currently working. Some of these are one on one assessments with me, while others will be on the computer. This means I will not be starting small group work right away but am hopeful to begin the last week in September.
Your first grader has a planner that they write in everyday, normally a message from the board, and then I sign at the end of the day. This is a great place to write a note if you need to tell me note or I may write how your student's day is in their planner. It is their responsibility to get it out and write in it everyday.
Our August Snack Calendar. September Snack Calendar. We have 22 students in our class, and we have a student with a "Tree Nut" allergy. Please be considerate of this allergy when choosing snacks.
